To make a long and boring story less long, but probably just as boring, we bought a new camera. And contrary to my previously stated intentions, I repeated my old pattern of buying the top-of-the-line subcompact on the market. It wasn't what I wanted. For what I want to do, it's not even what I need. However, it is exactly what Sarah wanted, and what the family needs. Oh yeah, and it cost less than half of what I intended to spend on other cameras/lenses/etc.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a $400 camera - way more than most people are willing to spend. But it does exacty what Sarah wants, takes snapshots in low light without blurring, and does so without having to know a lot about cameras. A photographer may notice the noise present in the pictures below. Nonetheless, the fact that a subcompact could take these pictures without blurring, each one in light that I would have great difficulty reading in, is pretty remarkable.

Still, it just won't do for what I want. Then again, what I want more than anything is a happy family - especially a happy wife. So if the Canon S95 pulls that feat off, then I truly don't have anything to complain about.
P.S. I should note that Sarah didn't pick out the new camera. I did. Nothing got forced on me in any way. Sarah would have been 100% behind me if I bought what I wanted instead of what we needed.
I admire your self control, only allowing a hint of bitterness to show through.
ReplyDeleteI think you're my designated sibling for this Christmas. Have something in mind?
Thanks Mike. I don't know about gifts. That's a tough concept for me. I'll let you know if I think of something.
ReplyDeleteSarah will have the camera whenever you are separated from her, so why have one that you really want? When you get promoted to Colonel, maybe you can have a camera of your own. It's generally considered a "personal device" anyway, like a razor or toothbrush.
ReplyDeleteHe will get his camera as soon as the money allows. He comes off as the martyr but he could have had his camera now. He's just to practical. What he really wants a fancy camera for is to take it up into the mountains. With is schedule, that wont happen anytime soon. So no hurry.
ReplyDeleteMike I can send you a list of options. Ryno will never do it himself. Gifts embarrass him.(he should bring that up with is shrink)
I love my new camera. Ryno is the best husband ever!
ReplyDeleteSarah, go ahead and send me that list. Right now I'm leaning towards getting him an appointment with a psychologist.
ReplyDeleteGood answer, Sarah. Ryno is indeed the best husband you've ever had or ever will - I'm not sure what I mean by that ...
ReplyDeleteI would love to go hiking with Ryno and have him participate in taking cool pics with me, instead of waiting impatiently or taking a trail nap. By the time he and I can do that, he'll be 50% bionic.
Now, if I had that camera I would be able to take some "sneaky pics" in supermarkets of the superfreaks I see down here ;-{>
Then again, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 is only $421, but not as svelte as the S95.
ReplyDeleteMichael, all Ryno has to do is go running down the corridor at work yelling, "Get me some help!" and he'd be shrink-wrapped faster than you can say, "Sled-ski-raisin-housefly-brawl-almost-beat-Ben-Hansen-at-racquetball."

ReplyDeleteMaybe. That might not be an uncommon sight at Psych Central.
